In 1972, Janice Luey, a recent graduate of Dance Educators of America in New York City founded the dance studio. She and her dance teaching staff, who were also trained in New York with D.E.A. brought a wide variety of dance styles to St. Catharines. While teaching dance, Janice also became involved in Garden City Productions doing musicals, and after 12 years of teaching decided to enter professional theatre. At this time, her younger sister Nancy was in Toronto studying theatre and had just finished performing professionally that summer. Janice asked Nancy to manage the school in her absence. Nancy consented to oversee the school’s operations for one year. [That was 25 years ago] Over the years, Janice performed for numerous seasons with the Stratford Festival, both performed and choreographed in Summerstock throughout Ontario and danced in shows in Toronto. Most recently, Janice was seen as a dancer in the movie, “Hairspray”.
Nancy fell in love with teaching and has never looked back. Previously, she had been studying dance and vocals in Toronto, attended Sheridan College to study Musical Theatre, and had completed all grades of vocal music with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Over the years Nancy has taken part and played leading roles in various musicals, and has studied dance, drama, and vocal music with some of New York’s finest directors. Nancy is currently the co-chair of the Vocal Music division of the St. Catharines Kiwanis Music Festival. She has guest taught at numerous schools in the Niagara region, directed and choreographed school musicals, and was the Drama Teacher at Wheatley Private School. That passion for theatre carries over into the dance studio where she and her long time dance friend and collegue, Tracy Thorpe, teach drama and musical theatre. Together, they continue to study dance to improve their technique.
Tracy Thorpe teaches the drama program. She brings a flare for theatre and is the head of the drama department at Laura Secord Secondary School. Tracy began dancing when she was 2 years old within our dance family, and later studied abroad through various venues. Tracy continues to perform throughout the Niagara region.
Shelley Needham joined our dance staff ten years ago after a long career of both dancing and teaching. She is also a graduate of D.E.A. and heads our competitive division. She shares our philosophy that even our more serious students are there for fun and team spirit.
Sandy Kreamer and Jill Needham have been with the studio most of their lives and they add a fun and youthful flare to our school. They continue to take classes and workshops to stay up on the latest styles and techniques.
The newest member of our team is Haley Penner, she has been with our studio since she was five, and along with teaching at our studio, she dances for the D.S.B.N.
Each class is accompanied by an assistant teacher.

The Janice Luey Dance Co. will share our love of dance with our students, while mentoring and nurturing them. All of our teachers are parents, and we feel that this enables us to be better teachers. We understand the needs of our students and we care for them like they are our own. Each class has an assistant teacher. We keep our classes to a maximum of 8 students, some having significantly less. This truly gives our students the personalized attention they deserve. We do not start recital dances in September. Class time is focussed primarily upon learning. We are not obsessive regarding the perfection of a recital dance. The Janice Luey Dance Co. is primarily a recreational school, with a small competitive division.
